Panchamvan: Sustainable Community Living near Mumbai
Panchamvan is an evolving model of community living near Mumbai, designed around principles of sustainability, natural building, and deep ecological consciousness. Conceived as a self-reliant rural-urban bridge, the project nurtures a slow, intentional lifestyle rooted in nature and community values.
Blurring Boundaries has designed and built the primary community space for Panchamvan using traditional and low-impact building techniques. The architecture celebrates the earth through mud construction methods such as cob, adobe, and earthbags, complemented by bamboo and ferrocement roofs, and finished with lime plasters. The foundations are constructed using random rubble masonry with local stone and lime mortar, grounding the building in its native context both literally and culturally. Each element reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility, climate responsiveness, and biophilic design.
The space is more than a structure—it’s a living system that grows with the community it shelters. It serves as a hub for learning, sharing, and co-creation—an inspiring example for those exploring sustainable architecture near Mumbai, natural building in India, and sustainable community living.
