When the site is around a stunning lake, it is but natural to build around it and fuse the lake visually into the built encompass. We did just that in the Astitva Spa block extension of Anantya Resorts, the curvilinear structure built around the lake, the private treatment rooms coming up as circular spaces that spill out to a private garden. The brick and stone structure springs a surprise at every turn in the interiors, the free flowing design culminating in an open deck facing the lake.
Nestled around the serene Chittar Lake in Kanyakumari, the Astitva Spa block extension of Anantya Resorts is and example of organic architecture. The design embraces the natural curves of the site, with the lake serving as a visual and emotional anchor. The curvilinear structure mirrors the fluidity of the water, offering an immersive experience where the built and natural environments blend seamlessly.
Each treatment room, designed as intimate circular pods, opens into private garden spaces, creating a personal retreat that fosters relaxation and connection with nature. The layout’s organic form enhances privacy while maintaining a cohesive, flowing spatial experience throughout the spa.
Exposed brick walls and local stone cladding lend an earthy, rustic charm, while textures, patterns, and intricately designed jaalis enhance the aesthetic appeal.
The free-flowing layout is highlighted by curved pathways that lead visitors through varying spatial experiences—from enclosed, cozy interiors to open, sunlit courtyards.
The roof design, executed using ferrocement, features undulating, wave-like forms, reinforcing the organic language of the building.
Kota stone flooring and IPS (Indian Patent Stone) finishes provide a durable and elegant surface, complementing the brick and stone textures.
The interiors surprise visitors with playful use of levels and openings, ensuring each corner offers a unique interaction with light and space.
The central courtyard acts as the heart of the spa, bringing in ample natural light and ventilation while offering a tranquil communal area.
Lush landscaping weaves around the structure, with the lake as a constant backdrop. Each treatment room has direct access to a private landscaped garden, fostering a deep sense of calm and privacy, following principles of biophilic design.
The open deck overlooking the lake is the highlight of the project, serving as a relaxation zone where guests can unwind while soaking in panoramic views of the serene water body.
The design philosophy is a respectful nod to the iconic Laurie Baker, renowned for his sustainable and cost-effective architectural practices. The use of locally sourced materials, passive cooling techniques, and natural ventilation ensures that the spa remains eco-friendly while providing a comfortable environment.
